1275578 Sampling blood CORNING GLASS WORKS 24 Oct 1969 52128/69 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions B8 F1 and F2] Apparatus for use in drawing off liquid samples comprises a sample chamber 12 within a housing 10, the chamber having an inlet 14 and an outlet 16 which is in communication with a chamber 20 via a tube 18. A flexible tube 22 and a further tube 30 also communicate with the chamber 20. The further tube is connected via a waste container 32 to a vacuum pump 34, and is normally closed by means of spring biassed lesser arm 36. A handle 26 is movable about the axis of a shaft 28 and carries a roller 24. The flexible tube 22 is squeezed between the roller and shaft so that on clockwise movement (see Fig. 3) of the handle a vacuum is induced to draw a sample into the sample chamber. When it is necessary to discharge a sample into the waste container the handle is moved until the roller is opposite a groove 44. The flexible tube will then be opened to atmosphere and the lever arm will be pivoted by a pin 42 movable with the handle 26. The vacuum pump 34 will thus cause the sample be discharged into the container 32. Alternatively the handle can be move anticlockwise to force a sample in the chamber 12 back through the inlet 14. The flexible tube 22 may alternatively be connected directly to the sample chamber. There is a reference to making pH measurements on blood samples; tests may be carried out on a sample while it is within chamber 12.
