958,916. Sampling liquids. D. T. HEMSLEY. April 8, 1963 [April 12, 1962]. No. 14274/62. Heading B8N. Apparatus for sampling water from depths of down to thirty feet or more in river estuaries comprises a container 12 having one or more liquid inlet conduits 32 and one or more air outlet conduits 25, the outer end of the latter extending outwardly beyond the outer end of the liquid inlet conduits so that, when the apparatus is immersed, the difference in pressures at the ends of the conduits will cause the liquid to flow into the container, and a closure device 36 which is movable relatively to the conduits to effect opening and closing of the outer ends of the conduits. As shown the liquid inlet conduit extends through a block 23 down into a second container 29 which, if sterilized, can be used for collecting a sample for bacteriological examination; the liquid which flows from the container 29 into the container 12 can be used for chemical analysis. The closure member, which is in the form of a cap 36 and slidably mounted on posts 35, is connected to toggle links 43, 45, the centre-pin 44 of each pair being urged towards the opposite pin 44 by tension springs. The apparatus, with the cap in its closed position over a rubber sealing block 26, is immersed by lowering a line connected to a handle 41 and, when at the required depth, the line is given a jerk to overcome the spring pressure and thereby cause the toggle mechanism to pivot and lift the cap and allow the water to fill the containers; when full, the apparatus is drawn up to the surface and an end cap 14 unscrewed to remove the inner container.
