Abstract
883,582. Sampling liquids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 2, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 30347/60. Class 106(5). Apparatus for taking samples of liquid from a pipeline comprises a plug 12 rotatable within a fixed sleeve 3 extending vertically across the line so that slots 13 and 4 are in line, allowing flow through them, or are out of line so that liquid trapped in the slot 13 is released through channels 16, 17, 18, 19 and a hose to a collecting vessel. During release, as the slot 13 comes in line with the channel 16, the pressure in the slot is released and subsequently the upper end of the slot communicates with a channel 23 leading to atmosphere and allows ready flow from the slot. The plug has a squared end 15 and can be rotated by hand or by a motor or by a drive coupled to a liquid meter so that samples are withdrawn in proportion to the quantity of liquid flowing in the line. Strips 27 may be provided on both sides of the slots 4 to reduce turbulence. Two other sleeves 9 and 5 are preferably provided, a fixed sleeve 9 with slots 10 and a sleeve 5 with a notched end 6 for rotating it to bring its slots 7 out of register with the slots 4 to allow removal of the sleeve 9 and plug 12 for inspection.
