A syphon for a flushing cistern 11 of the type shown in Fig. 1 has a hole 17 through the side wall of the bell 3 and a lug 16 on the piston 2 covering the hole 17 when the piston 2 is lifted sufficiently to initiate syphonic action and also sealing it to restrict the entry of air so that, if the piston 2 is held lifted, the action will continue until the water is below the bell 3, but if the piston 2 is allowed to fall immediately after being so lifted, it will continue until the water outside the bell 3 is below the top of the hole 17, when sufficient air enters the hole 17.
