Abstract

1,149,142. Differential gears. O. MUELLER. 5 June, 1967 [28 July, 1966; 13 Feb., 1967], No. 25891/67. Headings F2C and F2D. [Also in Division F1] In a vehicle differential excessive slip is resisted by throttling liquid pumped by three sets of pistons 54, 56, 58 which are reciprocated in radial bores in a pump housing 20 fast with a planet carrier 18 by a cam 42 rotating with a side wheel 32. The carrier is completely filled with hydraulic fluid to the exclusion of any air and forms a source of fluid for replenishing leakage losses from the pump. The pressure of the liquid in the carrier is maintained substantially constant despite temperature variations by an annular compensator 113, which may be an air-filled rubber torus or be of nitrogen-filled cellular material such as neoprene. The pump cylinders are arranged 40 degrees apart and the cam is of generally triangular form and such that on the occurrence of relative rotation between the planet carrier and the side wheel the pistons of each set reciprocate out of phase with the pistons of the other sets, and the volumetric displacement of one set for any time interval is substantially equal to the algebraic sum of the volumetric displacements for the other two sets.
