Abstract
1,149,008. Magnetrons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 10 Aug., 1966, No. 35754/66. Heading H1D. Slight tuning of a coaxial magnetron having an outer resonator 30 surrounding the anode structure 22, 24, is effected by tilting a tuning ring positioned in a groove 40 formed in the end wall of the cavity, and secured by a first flexible tab 44 to the cavity wall adjacent the output slot 32, and by a second flexible tab 50 to the end of a cantilever-mounted elongated member 52. Member 52 is secured at its outer end by screws 64, and is apertured to receive a polepiece 68 separated from a second cup-shaped polepiece 72 by a non-magnetic spacer 74, both polepieces lying within the fringe field of the magnetron main magnets 39 (Fig. 2, not shown). A coil 76 is mounted on the member 52 between the two polepieces, and when energized by a signal of a frequency comparable with the natural frequency of the member 52, flexes the latter and thereby tilts the tuning ring 42, to vary the frequency of the magnetron. A second coil may be mounted on member 52 to provide a monitoring feedback signal for amplitude modulating the voltage applied to coil 78, or to provide an indication of the position of the member 52. An additional plunger-type tuner 90, at the top of the resonator, permits adjustment of the frequency range of operation.
