A hydraulic pump, turbine or pump-turbine comprises two runners joined together and attached to the machine shaft by means of a carrier chamber, the runners being rotatable relative to the carrier chamber about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the shaft so that one of the runners enters into operation while the other is concealed in an inoperative position in the carrier chamber. In the machine shown, which can work either as a centrifugal pump or as an inward-flow turbine, turbine runner 5 is in the inoperative position in which it is concealed within a carrier chamber 2 while pump runner 4 is in the operative position in which it is in alignment with pivotable guide vanes 10. Changover to turbine operation is effected by turning the runners about a spindle 3 by means of a servomotor 6. In addition, the guide vanes 10 are turned to a new position. The pivotable guide vanes 10 and the radially inner portions of fixed guide vanes 11 may be replaced by axially silable guide vanes. The runners 4, 5 may both be pump runners, one being designed for a high rate of discharge and the other for a low rate. In this case the changover is effected manually while the machine is stopped.
