Abstract

1,117,745. Centrifugal pumps; hydraulic turbines. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. June 17, 1966 [Oct, 22, 1965 (3)], Nos. 44851/65, 44852/65 and 44853/65. Headings F1C and F1T. In order to reduce the frictional drag exerted on the outer surfaces of runner shrouds 28, 29, Fig. 4, of a pump, turbine or pump-turbine, the annular spaces 40, 40' are filled with air through pipes 44, 43 and liquid seals at the radially inner and outer extremities of the spaces are supplied with a drag reducing additive, e. g. polyethylene oxide. Labyrinth seals at the radially inner extremities of the spaces are supplied with sealing liquid by a pump 66 through an additive control 69 and a pressure control 68. Alternatively, the additive may be supplied to the spaces 40, 40' in which case the latter are filled with liquid, e.g. the working liquid, Fig. 3 (not shown), or the additive is supplied only to the liquid seals at the radially outer extremities of the spaces, Fig. 2 (not shown). Sealing liquid lost to the main flow produces a reduction in drag between the main flow and the machine parts wetted thereby.
