1,003,044. Hydraulic turbines; centrifugal pumps. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS Ltd. June 27, 1962 [June 28, 1961], No. 24769/62. Headings F1C and FIT. An axial-radial mixed flow hydraulic pump, turbine, or pump-turbine has a runner 3 having upper and lower shrouds 1, 2 and seals 7, 8 defining annular spaces 10, 11 with the stationary casing. Pipes 31, 30 supply air to spaces 10, 11 causing a void to be formed in the water therein so that fluid friction is reduced, the displaced water assisted by centrifugal action escaping through clearances 13, 14. Water is fed to seals 7, 8 through pipes 18, 17 at a pressure higher than the air pressure to prevent air leakage from spaces 10, 11.
