Abstract

1,148,308. Printing process. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 31 May, 1966, No. 24289/66. Heading B6C. In order to print on the surface of a plastic article, e.g. of polyethylene, of a thickness of not less than one mil and a secant modulus of from 1000 to 400,000 p.s.i., pigment particles of average diameter particle size from 0À02 to 200 microns are blasted from a gun-like structure on to the surface such that they penetrate and form a design layer flush therewith. The particles may be used alone, mixed with an 'impactor', such as sand, or coated on larger carrier particles. The printed product may be waxed and polished or subjected to heat treatment. Suitable designs may be effected by directing the gun-like structure to appropriate parts of the surface or by using masking sheets. In the described embodiment an air gun 14 propels particles of a pigment 9 against a plastic article 5 which by appropriate rotation of supporting rollers 3 is moved relative to the gun. Excess pigment falls to the bottom of a bin 6 for subsequent recycling. A plurality of air guns may be used for multi-colour effects. Conventional masks may be used.
