Abstract

1325226 Coating inside hollow objects; spray nozzles NORDSON CORP 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23240/71 Headings B2E B2F and B2L A hollow can body 10 is coated internally by the overlapping spray patterns from two nozzles 12, 13 which nozzles are operated during high speed rotation of the can. As shown in Fig. 2 cans 10 are indexed by a turret 21 to a coating point where they are pressed against a driving roller 22 by means of a pressure roller 24. After coating the cans are allowed to roll down a chute 18 to allow the coating to harden before they enter an oven (not shown) which completes the finishing process. The nozzles, which have apertures o or o' as shown in Figs. 3, 4 respectively, produce spray patterns which spray more coating material to one side of a central axis of the nozzle than is sprayed on the other side of said axis the effect being that when these nozzles are used in combination with an overlapping zone towards the centre of the can body a uniform distribution of coating material along the whole length of the can body is provided. The can is rotated in such a way that the leading edge of the seam moves directly towards the oncoming sprayed material thus ensuring that the seam is completely coated. The centrifugal force of the cans rotation also helps distribution of spray material. The coating materials may be vinyl, epoxy, phenolic, acrylic or alkyd.
