Abstract

An apparatus for applying a reflective marker to a surface comprises a first means for ejecting a stream of binder onto said surface the axis of said ejecting means being perpendicular to said surface and a second ejecting means located rearwardly with respect to the direction of travel of the apparatus, and of said first ejecting means, for ejecting a stream of dry glass spheres, the axis of said ejecting means being at an angle to said first ejecting means, the axis of said ejected stream of spheres intersecting said surface forwardly of the point of application of said stream of binder whereby a portion of the stream of glass spheres is intimately mixed with said stream of binder prior to application thereof to said surface and a portion of said stream of glass spheres falls onto said binder after application thereof to said surface.ALSO:A reflective marker is applied to a surface by a method comprising the steps of spraying a stream of binder onto said surface and simultaneously ejecting a stream of dry glass spheres at an angle to the stream of binder and adjacent thereto in an atomized fan-shaped spray in such a manner that a portion of said glass spheres spray is intimately mixed with said binder as the impinging streams are applied to said surface whereby said spheres become completely embedded in said marker and a portion of said dry glass spheres falls onto said marker after it has formed on said surface and while it is still tacky and becomes partially embedded therein as a top coating for instant reflectivity of said marker. The surface may be a road surface. The binder may be transparent and the glass spheres may be a mixture of transparent colourless glass spheres and coloured opaque resin-coated spheres of any desired colour. The coated spheres may be larger than the uncoated glass spheres and the coated spheres will become completely embedded while the smaller spheres will form a partially embedded top coating.
