Abstract

1,148,077. Paper. OWENS-ILLINOIS, Inc. 16 May, 1966 [14 May, 1965], No. 21609/66. Heading D2B. A pulp-plastic composition is made by adding to an aqueous slurry of fibres, the major proportion of which are cellulose pulp fibres, at least 10% dry wt. of the pulp solids of an organo-metal compound and an organic thermoplastic polymer. The pulp is then agi tated and the organo-metal compound is hydrolysed to cause fibrillation of the pulp and deposit the hydrolysis product (metal oxide) and polymer onto the fibres. The bulk of the aqueous phase is then removed from the slurry. The pulp may additionally contain glass fibres or flakes. The resulting composition may be shaped, e.g. by pressure and/or heat, into sheet material which can be used for corrugated or liner sheets or board which can be bonded without the use of other adhesives. The pulp-plastic composition can be used as a laminating article with paper, wood and plastic and metal sheets. The polymer can be hydrocarbon wax, a homopolymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene and but-1-ene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, nylon, or preferably an aqueous emulsion of polyethylene. The polymer may be added as a powder or in solution or emulsion form. The organo-metal compound may be of Ti, Zr, Sn or. V, e.g. alkyl titanates, preferably C 1 -C 8 alkyls e.g. tetrabutyl titanates, tetraisopropyl titanates, tetrahexyl titanates, alkyl zirconates, and tin salts of monocarboxylic acids of up to 18 carbon atoms per mol, e.g. stannous oleate, stearate and palmitate, and stannous naphthenate. Corresponding vanadium compounds are also suitable. Dyes, pigments and fillers and dispensing agents, e.g. oleic acid and sodium hydroxide, can be added to the pulp.
