Abstract
1,147,706. Benzene; naphthalene; anthracene. H. NEWBY (Universal Oil Products Co.). 15 July, 1966, No. 31864/66. Heading C5E. Unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, naphthalene and anthracene, are obtained by subjecting a charge stock containing corresponding alkylaromatic hydrocarbons together with olefinic, nitrogenous and/or sulphurous contaminants (and possibly also oxygenous contaminants) to the following process sequence:- (1) Reaction with hydrogen below 500‹ F. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metalcontaining hydrogenating component, e.g. Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and/or Pt, on a non-acidic carrier material, e.g. alumina or aluminium hydroxide, thereby hydrogenating any diolefins present and partially hydrogenating at least part of the alkyl aromatics; (2) Further reacting the effluent from (1) with hydrogen above 500‹ F. in the presence of a catalyst having hydrogenation-dehydrogenation activity, e.g. CrO 3 /Al 2 O 3 , Pt/Al 2 O 3 , Mo/ Al 2 O 3 , W/Al 2 O 3 , Pd/Cl 2 /Al 2 O 3 , Pt/Cl 2 /Al 2 O 3 , thereby converting nitrogenous and sulphurous contaminants into hydrocarbons, NH 3 and H 2 S, and dehydrogenating partially hydrogenated alkylaromatics formed in (1); (3) Removing NH 3 and H 2 S from the effluent from (2), e.g. by stripping; and (4) Catalytically hydrodealkylating the decontaminated charge-stock, suitable catalysts being a Group VIII noble metal or a refractory oxide. Suitable catalysts and conditions for each stage are given, and a detailed flow-sheet is used to illustrate the process.
