Abstract

1355344 Dealkylating C 8 aromatic hydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 July 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 37940/70 Heading C5E A process for the preferential dealkylation of ethylbenzene in a mixture of ethylbenzene and xylenes comprises passing the feed with steam, preferably in substantial molar excess, in the vapour phase at 300-800‹ C. over a catalyst comprising Ag, Au or a Group VIII metal on a support and separating benzene from the other aromatic hydrocarbons in the organic phase of the product. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 5-50 atmos. gauge and in the presence of H 2 . The Group VIII metal may be Ni, Pt, Pd, RR, Ru or Ir and the support is preferably Al 2 O 3 containing at least 50% alpha-alumina. Aliphatic hydrocarbons may be present in the feedstock.
