1313942 Dealkylating alkylbenzenes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Dec 1970 [9 Jan 1970 27 July 1970 18 Nov 1970] 48919/72 48920/72 and 48921/72 Divided out of 1313941 Heading C5E Alkylbenzenes are dealkylated in the vapour phase in the presence of steam and hydrogen over a solid catalyst consisting of at least one Group VIII noble metal on a support comprising alumina, being recovered from the products and other aromatic hydrocarbons being recycled to the feed. The reaction temperature may be 400-800‹ C. and the pressure 5-50 atmos. gauge. The amount of H 2 fed to the process may be 5-50 mole per cent based on hydrocarbon and steam feed. The molar ratio of steam to alkylbenzene may be 12 : 1 to 40 : 1. Examples describe the dealkylation of toluene over a Pt on gamma Al 2 O 3 catalyst.
