Abstract

1,146,758. Making threaded articles; screwing. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. 1 Nov., 1966 [24 March, 1966], No. 48951/66. Headings B3A and B3N. A machine for making headed and threaded articles, e.g. screws and bolts, comprises a header 10 to form headed blanks from wire stock 16, a transfer means 11 operable between the header and a supply position 12, a threader 14 operable to receive blanks from the supply 12 and discharge positions 18, 29 for the header and threader which are positioned closely adjacent. The header and the threader are mounted on separate frames 36, 37 and the threader is driven by the header in timed relationship through a flexible drive coupling (52), Fig. 3 (not shown). The header 10 is preferably a double blow header which automatically cuts off wire blanks. The blanks from the supply 12 are fed with their shank downwards between an inclined pair of rails (27), Fig. 3 (not shown), to a pointer 13 which forms a point on the ends of the blank and then between rails (28) to the threader. The discharge positions 18, 32 are arranged adjacently so that an operator 17 can sample the blanks and finished bolts. The header, supply, pointer and threader are preferably of the type disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 3,031,698.
