Liquid is maintained at constant pressure by inlet pump 12 and overflow 14, leading back to a supply tank (not shown), in space 13 on the upstream side of filter elements 18, which consist of perforate bodies enclosed by porous cellulose, and filtrate pump 23, together with valves 26, 28, 29, create a small pressure drop across elements 18 so that the flow therethrough is substantially independent of pressure and of the order of flow which would be produced by capillary action within the elements. The elements thus capture particles on their upstream surfaces by molecular attraction, these particles conglomerating and falling off. The elements are periodically backwashed with detergent and air.
