[Class 46] [Also in Groups II and XXII] A method of constructing a porous metal or alloy member, for use, for example, as a filter, having a base of wire gauze, perforated metal, or like material, includes arranging the base in a container, causing a stream of fluid with suspended metal particles to flow through the container, and through the base so that particles are deposited thereon, and subsequently sintering the particles so that they adhere to the base. A second layer of finer particles may be deposited upon the first layer and subsequently sintered. As shown in Fig. 3, a wire gauze support 4 is mounted in a framework 5 arranged in a container 6, in which is a liquid with suspended metal particles. The liquid is circulated through the support by means of a pump 9, and may be agitated by compressed air supplied through a pipe 8. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the particles are carried on an air stream and projected against a flat wire gauze base 12. The air passing through the base enters a pneumatic vortex separator 16 in which particles carried over by the air are returned through conduit 21 to the bottom of the container 13.
