Abstract
1,186,774. Liquid filter. HYDROMATION ENG. CO. 24 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966; 20 Feb., 1967], No. 24035/67. Heading B1D. A filter for water comprises a bed of granular polyvinyl chloride 18, of particle size 0.20 to 0.50 mm. and specific gravity 1.0 to 1.6, confined between wire mesh or nylon cloth members 20, 22, with perforate tubes 28, 30 for supplying backwashing filtrate embedded therein. In Fig. 1, a single filter element of hollow annular form encloses a bed of radial thickness 6 to 12 inches, filtering flow is inwards and tubes 28, 30 are rotated during backwashing by piston-cylinder motor 54. Liquid is delivered from a reservoir (71) by a pump (73) to inlet 70, filtrate flows from outlet 74 to a reservoir (79) by line 76. A pressure monitor in housing 12 operates solenoid valves and pump motors when the filter clogs, stopping the liquid inlet and delivering backwashing filtrate to inlet 64 and outlet 74 simultaneously, the bed being thereby fluidised and contaminated liquid discharging by outlet 82 to a further reservoir (85). The cleaning continues until a timer in the control circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) restores the status quo. In Fig. 1A (not shown) the filtrate outlet acts as a further contaminated backwash liquid outlet, and backwash liquid is delivered only to tubes 28, 30. Tubes 28, 30 could reciprocate vertically instead of rotating, or may be fixed as in other embodiments. Fig. 1 shows a filter element in a closed housing, but in Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the element is located in an open tank with an inlet overflow (111) and an outlet suction pump (116) , Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) illustrate several annular elements in a common housing, with a venturi device whereby air is drawn into the backwashing liquid. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates a flat, downward flow element, in which outlet (174) serves for filtrate and dirty backwash liquid.
