Abstract

1,135,128. Filter. O. PAUSER. 11 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 21925/67. Heading BID. A filtering device comprises a housing 11 having a portion for water to flow therethrough including a volume between sieve plates 13 and 14 containing a filter .mass of resilient porous pieces, the plates 13 and 14 being arranged transversely to the normal flow of water through the said portion so that the filter pieces are forced against upper plate 17 during filtration, valve means 20 for reversing the sense of flow through the said portion during backflushing to displace the filter mass towards lower plate 14, and a water circulating pump 30 drawing filter pieces through pipe 30a and discharging them back to the said portion via pipe 30c which has an outlet at the side of plate 13 facing plate 14. In operation, for filtering (Fig. 1 not shown) water to be filtered enters at 11e, is pumped by motor 17 through pipes 16b, 16c, perforated plate 14, through chips of foam plastic 15 forced by the flow of water against perforated plate 13, down pipe 22 and out at 11f. For cleaning the filter (Fig. 2), e.g. in response to a predetermined pressure measured by pressure gauge 18, the valve in housing 20 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 by activation from programmer 32 so that water entering at lie now flow along pipe 16b and up pipe 22 and down through plate 13 and then down inside housing 11a to allow medium 15 to move downwards. Removed dirt flows out with the water through pipe 25a and outlet 11g. When the medium 15 reaches perforated plate 14, programmer 32 causes throttle valve 19 to be activated to reduce the flow of water past it and into housing 11a to prevent medium 15 being pressed against perforated plate 14, and simultaneously programmer 32 activates motor 30 to circulate medium 15 down pipe 30a up pipe 30c back into housing 11a.
