Abstract

1,145,559. Pipe tapping sleeves. ABBOTT, BIRKS & CO. Ltd. 17 Nov., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 56892/66. Heading F2G. [Also in Division B3] A device for connecting a branch pipe to a main gas pipe 11, Fig. 2, comprises a saddle member 12 provided with a first tubular part 14 extending perpendicularly therefrom with a second tubular part 15 extending substantially perpendicularly from the first tubular part and having a housing 21 in its main pipe engaging surface receiving a sealing ring 22, the outer end of the second tubular part 15 having means for connecting the branch pipe thereto, the outer end of the first tubular part 14 being screwthreaded externally to receive an obturating member and its internal surface 17 being smooth. The saddle member may be secured adhesively or two saddle members (12), (13), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be drawn together by channel-shaped wedging clips (25). The hole 40 is made by cutter 38 which is rotated by handle 37 and advanced by the movement of screwthreaded sleeve 30. The cutter 38 may have an internal screw-thread 39 to enable it to engage, hold and withdraw a disc which is cut out of the main gas pipe 11. The cutting tool may be replaced by a closure cap (19).
