Abstract

1,145,450. Encapsulating electrical devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 7 March, 1967 [8 April, 1966], No. 10632/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions B2 and H1] Thermally stable electrically conductive surfaces are provided on an electrical structure, e.g. an encapsulated coil unit comprising high and low voltage coils 20, 22, by coating, e.g. by spraying or brushing, the appropriate mould surfaces, coated with release agent, e.g. silicone oil, with a conductive coating 70 of conductive particles in a liquid carrier, prior to inserting the coils 20, 22 into the mould on plastics spacers 60; the closed mould is then evacuated through opening 68 as encapsulating resin, e.g. epoxy resin, is admitted through opening 66 to fill the mould and which resin is then cured in the sealed mould, e.g. in an oven at 125‹ C. for 16 hours, whereby the coating 70, the liquid carrier whereof preferably incorporates a similar resin to the encapsulating resin, is integrally moulded on to the surface of the encapsulated unit. The liquid carrier may include water or solvents which may be removed by heating the mould prior to moulding. The conducting particles may be pigment or colloidal graphite, carbon black, silver, copper or aluminium. Graphite and acetylene black formulations with alkyd and phenolic varnish, and graphite formulations with water or epoxy resin are specified.
