Abstract

[Also in Division B2] In the preparation of the inside surfaces of foundry receptacles 2 such as moulds, tundishes &c., particles are projected on to the surface 1 by a centrifugal blaster 11, the waste particles are sucked out by a nozzle 56 and then a coating is applied to the surface 1 by the same centrifugal blaster 11 which may also be used to air dry the said coating. Reservoirs 16, 17 contain the particles and the coating material and valves 39, 41 allow access to an air blown conduit 33, 35, 36 fed from a compressor 42. The particles may be abrasive silicaceous grains, waste or casting splinters, crushed metal turnings, grains of cast iron or silica or preferably steel balls of 5-7 mm. in diameter. The coating may include whitewash layers such as milk of lime or tar. Also the dust of the particles and worn particles may be mixed with an aqueous solution of silicates or resins to form the coating material. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3 (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) the apparatus comprises a first carriage 9 movable on tracks 7 aligned with a mould 2 mounted on a pivotable table 3. On the carriage 9 is a second carriage 13, movable on tracks 12 at right angles to tracks 7, that carries a framework 15 on which is mounted for vertical movement a support 19 on which is mounted the centrifugal blaster 11. Behind the blaster 11 is a shield 22 that prevents particles emerging from the interior of the mould 2 as the blaster 11 is fed therethrough. Nozzle 56 sucks up the waste and a sieve 61 separates the particles from the dust, the particles being air blown by compressor 67 back to a hopper 68, the dust being similarly blown to a dust removing cyclone device (not shown). In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4-9, not shown) a mould (79) is arranged vertically and a centrifugal blaster 11 and combined reservoir arrangement (84) are suspended from a lifting hook (91) for lowering into the mould (79). A waste extracting and separating device (77) is provided and supplies cyclones (125), (126). The blaster 11 and reservoir arrangement (84) can be lowered beneath the cyclones (125), (126) for filling the reservoirs therefrom.
