Abstract
394,668. Moulding abrasive and refractory articles. CARBORUNDUM CO., Ltd., Trafford Park Road, Manchester. -(Carborundum Co. ; Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 28, 1931, No. 31690/32. Divided on 394,667. [Class 87 (ii).] Moulded refractory and abrasive articles are. made by jolting in a mould a mix containing a granular material and a bond, removing excess mix from the mould, e.g. by striking off the upper surface, and applying a consolidating pressure to the mix remaining in the mould. The jolting may be continued during the final consolidation which may be carried out so that a predetermined volume of the mix in the mould is consolidated to a predetermined volume, e.g. by means of a stop mould. By controlling the direction of the jolting the orientation of the particles of the granular materials, which are usually of irregular dimensions, may be controlled, e.g. by jolting the mix in a vertical direction only the particles may be orientated so as to lie horizontally. Abrasive wheels may be made in the apparatus shown which includes a mould held centred on a table 10 by springs 15 and comprising a. body ring 3, a strike-off ring 4, a base plate 5 and a central post 6 for forming the arbor hole in the wheel. The table 10 has a plungerlike support 11 fitting in the top of an air cylinder 12 and normally resting on shoulders 14; the mould may be vibrated vertically by alternately admitting air pressure to the cylinder 12 and releasing the pressure. The mould may be vibrated in a number of horizontal directions by pneumatically operated hammers 16 .. 19, each guided by pins 20 and having a plunger 21 sliding in the end of an air cylinder 22 to which pulsations of air are applied. A follower plate 43 guided by a post 6<1> projecting from the post 6 may be provided for a preliminary consolidation of the material.
