Abstract

790,003. Moulding grinding and polishing tools. BISTERFELD, E., [trading as BISTERFELD & STOLTING]. June 18, 1955, No. 17678/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIII] A grinding or polishing tool is made by filling mould with abrasive grains, compacting the grains by vibration, subjecting the compacted grains to pressure to form a rigid skeleton and, while maintaining the grains under pressure, injecting thermoplastic or thermosetting material into the mould so as to partly or wholly fill the spaces in the skeleton. In Fig. 2 abrasive grains 1 are filled into a die 5 having a base plate 8 through which projects a spindle 9 that is to form part of the abrasive article, then the grains are vibrated and subsequently compressed by a ram 7, and then synthetic material is injected into the die through a passage 10 in the ram. During injection, pressure is maintained by the ram. Air escapes from the die through passages 11, 11<SP>1</SP> in the base. In Fig. 5 a perforated steel disc 14 is faced with abrasive grains, the injection taking place through two passages 10 in the ram and runners 10<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 6 shows the making of a tanged file the injection being end-on. The making of spheres and bevel wheels is described. Fig. 11 shows a wheel having zones of fine and coarse abrasive grains. Fig. 12 illustrates the making of a cylindrical tool 14 having abrasive strips 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> moulded. into grooves in the surface thereof and anchored therein by inserts 16<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>11</SP>. Strips 4, Fig. 1d, may be dissolved or etched away after moulding has been completed (to leave recesses for grinding dust). In general : Air may be exhausted from the die. Porous grinding tools may be made by forcing gas or liquid through the die after injection of the synthetic material, the gas &c. washing out part of the material: or sucking out part of the material : or part of the material may be removed by centrifugal action : or surface porosity may be achieved by mixing granular ceramic material or glass with the abrasive material before it is filled into the die, this granular material falling out during use. Non-metallic fabrics may be embedded in the abrasive material. Spindles &c. to be embedded in the articles may be initially coated with a mixture of abrasive and synthetic material to assist adhesion : or may be roughened, contoured &c. for that purpose. The dies used may be " lost " moulds, made of porcelain, glass, wood or rubber, reinforced during moulding with a steel jacket. The dies may be coated with liquid paraffin release agent.
