Abstract

1,144,904. Casting composite articles; casting processes; making ingots. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. 18 Feb., 1966 [27 Jan., 1965], No. 3533/65. Addition to 1,020,514. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division C7] A metal article, e.g. to be machined and turned down to form a billet, comprises an alloy in which are embedded and bonded reinforcing wires of Nb or Mo or their alloys and is produced in a manner similar to that described in the main specification, viz. by arranging the wires in a container connected to a source of suction and closed by a diaphragm, heating the container and immersing the diaphragm in the molten alloy to melt the diaphragm so that the alloy infiltrates around the wires; in this case the wires are first coated with W to prevent dissolution by the matrix alloy. The coating of W may be applied by a vapour phase process by packing the wires in a mixture of W powder and I and heating in H and then Ar. In the case of Mo alloy, the wires are given an intermediate Cr coating, by a similar process, before the W coating. The matrix alloy is a Ni-based alloy containing 18-21% Cr, 5% max Fe, 1% max Si, 0À15% max Cu, 1% max Mn, 0À2-0À6% Ti and 0À08-0À15% C and the container and a collar holding the wires are made of the same alloy. The wires may be a Nb alloy whose other constituents are 11% W, 3% Mo, 2% Hf and 0À08% C.
