Abstract

1,144,798. Hypodermic needles; catheters. S. HUSTED-ANDERSEN (trading as D.E.H. VED S. HUSTED-ANDERSEN) 16 Nov., 1967 [17 Nov., 1966], No. 52191/67. Heading A5R. A needle, intended for use in the placement of an intravenous catheter, comprises a tubular body which is provided with a longitudinally-extending slit and also with a longitudinally-extending fracturing line. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the needle comprises a tubular body 2 provided with a fracturing line 6 which extends longitudinally of the needle and which is located diametrically opposite a slit 7 extending longitudinally of the needle. Integrally formed with the tubular body to lie one on either side of the longitudinally-extending slit are lugs 3 and 4 which are axially staggered but which partially overlap each other. After penetration of for example a vein by the pointed end 5 of the needle and insertion of a catheter 8 through the needle and into the vein, the needle is withdrawn from the vein and is broken along the fracturing line by separating the lugs thereby to allow the needle to be removed from the catheter. As illustrated in Figure 4 (not shown), the needle may be formed by rolling from a flat blank of thin steel sheet.
