1,144,181. Proximity switching arrangements. OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc. April 12, 1966 [April 12, 1965], No.15823/66. Heading G1N. The invention relates to apparatus for inspecting sealed containers on a high-speed-conveyer, in which the desired degree of vacuum in the container is indicated by a flip panel whose position is detected by a proximity switch. The containers on the conveyer are guided to the inspection position by side plates (32), (34) Figs. 1, 2 (not shown). To allow for minor variations in the height of the containers, or tilted lids (due to improper threading), the proximity switch is mounted in a spring-loaded floating head, Figs. 1, 4 (not shown). To suppress false signals from the leading and trailing edges of the lid, a second proximity switch (204) Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), is arranged beside the container, so that the flippanel-detector is only operative when the container is in position under the floating head. Dud containers are rejected by a pneumatic ejector which punches them sideways off the conveyer. The proximity switching element may form part of an oscillator circuit associated with a monostable flip-flop and relay.
