Material is crystallized in the presence of a constant magnetic field by zone-melting, crystal-pulling, or progressive freezing. As shown, a molten zone 3 produced by a heater 4 is passed through material in a boat 2. The heater is situated between pole pieces 8 of a permanent or electro-magnet.
