Abstract

1,143,462. Rotary internal combustion engines. CLAYG CORP. Feb.24, 1966, No.8229/66. Heading F1F. A rotary I.C. engine comprises a power rotor 8, Fig. 4, and a compression chamber rotor, two as shown, 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, coupled for synchronous rotation within a housing block 6 by external gearing (not shown), with the power rotor having a projecting lobe and the compression chamber rotor having a cavity with the lobe and cavity so shaped to form a sealed compression chamber between a lobe apex 28 and the leading face of the cavity and a sealed combustion chamber 147 between the apex and the trailing face of the cavity and transfer passage means which when the lobe has moved to a certain position transfers the compressed combustible gases from the compression chamber to the combustion chamber where they are ignited. The projecting lobes have a shape in which leading and trailing faces are joined by an apex with the leading and trailing faces each having a profile defined in polar coordinates by the equation:- where # has values from 0 degrees to (A +B)<SP>2</SP> - 5A<SP>2</SP>/-4A<SP>2</SP> where A = the radius of the power rotor and B = the distance from the tip of the lobe to the nearest edge of the circle of radius A and the cavities have a shape defined in polar co-ordinates by the equation;- R = -A<SP>1</SP> (A<SP>1</SP> +2B<SP>1</SP>) cos# where # has the values from where A<SP>1</SP> = the diameter of the compression chamber rotor and B<SP>1</SP> = the depth of the cavity. In operation, combustible gases from, e.g., a carburetter are admitted through ports 42 and compressed ahead of the lobes in chambers 46, Fig. 10, until top dead centre position, Fig. 16, is reached. The gases are then transferred through ducts 48 formed in the housing side plates to chambers 47 at the rear of the lobes and then ignited by spark-plugs located at 50. The expanding gases act on the lobes to rotate the rotor and are finally expelled through ports 44. A spring-loaded seal 32, Fig.8 is provided at each apex 28 and a toe-seal 36 at each side of each cavity. The toe-seal is hinged at 38 and urged by resilient means, e.g., a silicon rubber dowel 40 sealingly against the lobe.
