Abstract

1,142,688. Photographic antihalation layers. FERRANIA S.p.A. March 21, 1966 [May 31, 1965], No. 12389/66. Heading G2C. A photographic support carrying an antihalation layer is prepared by applying to the support a coating of an aqueous composition containing lightabsorbing antihalation material such as carbon black or an antihalation dye, and a dissolved water-soluble ammonium salt of a normally solid water-insoluble carboxyl-group-containing phenolaldehyde condensation polymer, said ammonium salt being thermally decomposable at 100 to 200‹C. to form the water-insoluble but alkali-soluble free acid form of the polymer, and heating the coating to give said free acid form. The other surface of the support may be coated with a photosensitive gelatine silver halide emulsion. The polymers specified are condensation products of aliphatic or aromatic aldehydes or of phenol-or cresol-alcohols with hydroxyphenyl carboxylic or alkoxyphenyl carboxylic acids. Antihalation dyes include yellow, magenta and green dyes which as the ammonium salts decompose at 100 to 120‹C. to form a water-insoluble free acid form which is soluble in alkali. The antihalation coating may also include stabilizers, plasticizers, spreading agents and surfactants. The coating may itself be coated by a thin layer of wax from a solution in a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
