Abstract
944,125. Photographic films. KODAK Ltd. March 7, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 8072/60. Heading G2C. [Also in Division B2] A photographic film is produced by forming on one side of a polyester or polycarbonate film a layer of an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride, thereafter orientating and crystallising the polyester film and subsequently forming over the copolymer layer after drying a layer of an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a copolymer of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and an acrylic acid ester or methacrylic acid ester and volatilising ammonia and water from the layer to form a substantially dry layer, and coating the other side of the film with a light sensitive silver halide emulsion layer. The polyester may be polyethylene terephthalate. The vinylidene chloride copolymer may be a terpolymer of vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate,n-butyl acrylate or acrylonitrile, and itaconic acid; or vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid; in the ratio by weight of 83 : 15 : 2; or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile or n-butyl acrylate in the ratio by weight of 85 : 15. The ammonium salt may be that of a copolymer of a lower alkyl ester of methacrylic acid, in which the alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and methacrylic acid. The aqueous solution may contain from 90 to 98% by weight of water and may also contain a spreading agent, a pigment, an antihalation dye or an antistatic agent. The antistatic agent may be carbon black, the particles of which are not greater than 30 millimicrons in size. The aqueous solution may contain from 1 to 5% by weight of the copolymer and from 1/3 to 1/4 of the weight of copolymer of 28% by weight ammonia solution. There may be coated on the vinylidene chloride copolymer layer an antihalation composition comprising ethyl cellulose phthalate which has been ground up with finely divided carbon, a methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer which has also been ground up with finely divided carbon, ammonium hydroxide and at least 15% of water, and the coating then dried to remove substantially all the water and ammonia. The ratio by weight of ethyl cellulose phthalate with ground up carbon to copolymer with ground up carbon is 1 : 1. The ground up carbon may constitute 30% by weight of the ethyl cellulose phthalate mixture. Examples of spreading agents, pigments and antihalation dyes are given.
