Abstract

1,142,381. Fluid-pressure actuators. E. MATHEWS ENG. CO. Ltd. May 31, 1966, No. 24175/66. Heading F1P. In a fluid-pressure actuator, comprising a double-acting piston 48 slidable in a cylinder 38 and having a rack 49 engaging the pinion 55 of an output shaft 52 mounted in bearings in a housing 44, a plunger 68 is provided on each end of the piston and is arranged at the ends of its stroke to co-act with the respective end closures 41, 42 of the cylinder to obstruct the outflow of fluid and thereby cushion the piston stroke. As shown, each plunger 68 is tapered and is retained in a bore 64 in the end of the piston by a circlip 72. The plunger is a loose fit in the bore 64 to allow a limited amount of radial movement of the plunger, a bush 71 and a resilient rubber ring being inserted between the plunger and the circlip to provide some resistance to radial movement. Each plunger 68 enters a port 65 in the respective end closure to restrict the outflow of fluid. Alternatively Fig. 1 (not shown) each plunger is spring loaded and adapted to a cover its port 65, a restricted outflow then occurring through a transverse groove (34) in the face of the plunger covering the port. The piston is provided with seals 51 and the space therebetween is filled with lubricant, a relief valve being provided to limit the pressure of the lubricant.
