Abstract

1,142,241. Discharge treatment. GOURDINE SYSTEMS Inc. 2 March, 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 9127/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H2] The working gas in an electrogasdynamic generator (see Division H2) has chemical reactions induced in it by a high frequency, high voltage spark discharge. In operation the working fluid which comprises a gas including a condensable constituent, e.g. saturated steam or air, is introduced under pressure through inlets 18 into channel 13 where it is accelerated in plug nozzle 25 and ionized by the electric field between corona electrode 22 and attractor electrode 32. The fluid condenses in passing through throat 28 and expands through the ion repelling field, produced in area 53 between collector electrode 47 and shield electrode 36, to increase the voltage on electrode 47. Electrode 47 is connected to a discharge device 59 which has high impedance to make negligible current flow between electrode 55 and earthed electrode 57. The voltage on collector electrode 47 rises until a spark discharge occurs to electrode 36 which induces chemical reactions in the working fluid, e.g. producing ozone. Alternatively, the spark may be formed between electrodes 55, 57 to treat gases in space 56.
