Abstract

1,141,415. Thermionic cathode constructions. M.E.L. EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. 11 Sept., 1967, No. 41331/67. Heading H1D. Cooling of the end of the emissive portion of a directly heated filament by heat conduction along a lead-in wire is prevented by providing a non-emissive filament portion between the emissive portion and the lead-in wire. In Fig. 1 the emissive portion 1 is a flat spiral which is joined at one end to a helical wire 3 connected to a lead-in conductor (not shown) and at the other end to a second helical wire 5 connected to a second lead-in conductor (not shown). The filament may be of tungsten wire coated at the emissive portions with alkaline earth oxides, and is suitable for use in an electron gun, e.g. for a linear accelerator.
