Abstract

1,140,672. Crimping yarns. KLINGER MFG. CO. Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966 [10 Feb., 1965], No. 5755/65. Heading D1F. Yarn 12 having a thermoplastic component e.g. continuous filament thermoplastic yarn is drawn between first and second devices such as draw rollers 18, 19 the yarn being heated by the drawing process and then being fed through a short distance, e.g. less than 20 cms., to a device which crimps the softened yarn by linear compression e.g. a stufler box crimper 26, 29. The draw rollers 18, 19 are each associated with a skew roller 17, 20 so that the several turns about each roller are spaced. Between draw roller 19 and the nip rollers 21, 22 of the stuffer box 26, 29 is a tubular guide 23 which has bell ends and a longitudinal slot to facilitate threading up. The guide may be heated to maintain the yarn in its softened state. The yarn in the stuffer box is heated by means 29 The separation of the axes of rollers 18, 19 is less than twice and preferably less than the sum of their diameters. The diameter of rollers 18, 19 is preferably at least twice the diameter of the nip rollers 21, 22. The separation of rollers 18, 19 is preferably greater than the separation of roller 19 and nip rollers 21, 22. As shown the yarn passes from a bobbin 13 via a tensioner 14 and a driven roller 16, to the draw rollers 18, 19. The speed of roller 16 is equal to or greater than the speed of roller 18, which is less than the speed of roller 19, the speed of nip rollers 21, 22 is equal to the speed of roller 19. The plug of yarn leaving the crimping chamber is sensed by optical means 39, 40 and the speed of roller 37 driving the take-up package 35 is varied accordingly to maintain the head of the plug between the means 39, 40. A snubbing pin may be positioned between the drawing rollers to limit the size of the drawing. region.
