Abstract

872,496. Crimping yarns. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd., ERNEST. April 19, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13099/59. Class 120(3) Yarn of continuous, thermoplastic e.g. nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, filaments is bulked by continuously withdrawing it from a source of supply, injecting it into a stuffer-box crimping mechanism wherein the applied crimp is set by heating and cooling and from which the yarn is continuously extracted, passing the yarn through a zone in which a predetermined degree of contraction is permitted and the yarn is heated to re-orient the molecular structure thereof, and winding the yarn on a take-up package. As shown, yarn 11 drawn from a bobbin 12 is passed through and over eyelet 13 and rollers 14, 15, to nip rollers 16, 17, which inject it into a crimper 18. Nip rollers 19, 20 extract the crimped yarn from the crimper at a rate corresponding to the feed rate thereto and the yarn passes over a heated surface 21 or roller (not shown) thence via nip rollers 23, 24 or directly (not shown) to a package 22, the contraction being determined by a speed differential between rollers 19, 20 and rollers 23, 24 or package 22. The yarn tension between the pairs of nip rollers is " substantially zero". Specification 857,974 is referred to.
