Abstract

114,058. Durand, E. April 14, 1917. Stoppers, bayonet-joint. - Glass or earthenware bayonet-joint stoppers for bottles or jars containing preserved food are so constructed that when the stopper is partially turned it is held in position on the jar, but is free to rise to permit air to escape from the jar during the process of sterilization.. The stopper B, Fig. 1, preferably of the same diameter as the cylindrical jar A, is formed with two flanges or projecting parts b<1> having inclined upper surfaces and terminating in stops or shoulders b<2>, openings b<3> between the flanges allowing the stopper to pass projections a<1> on the inside of the mouth of the jar. A ring b<4> of cork, rubber, &c. is situated beneath the head of the stopper. When the stopper is inserted and partially turned, it is held in position by the lugs a being above the flanges b<1>, but the stopper is free to rise until it is fully turned. In a modification, Fig. 4, the stopper B fits over the mouth of the jar A and has two recesses b<5> with inclined bearing-surfaces to engage lugs a<1> on the outside of the jar. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement in which the recesses b<5> extend to the ends of the flanges of the stopper and the cork ring b<4> fits in a recess in the outside of the jar, a projecting portion b<7> in the stopper bearing against the ring b<4> when the stopper is fully turned.
