1441. Todd, R. D., and Hazlewood, W. H. Jan. 25. Stoppers for bottles, jars, &c. are formed of an internal conical plug b, Fig. 2, made of metal, glass, earthenware, wood, &c., provided with a washer g of suitable size, which is adapted to slide on the plug b and to be seated on the conical mouth of a bottle c, and a metal cap a, which is in the first place loosely connected to the plug b by turning in three or more lugs formed in the side of the cap, so as to make the lugs embrace a flange b<2> of the plug. The stopper is hermetically closed by placing the cap a so that the lugs pass through spaces e', Fig. 6, formed between flanges e on the bottle neck ; then, by rotation of the cap, the lugs come in contact with the helical edges e<2> of the flanges e, thereby causing the cap a to descend and to force the plug b tightly against the mouth, a further rotation locking the cap in position. The cap a may be secured to the bottle by other means.
