Abstract

1,139,563. Acidifying yarns. UNIROYAL Inc. 8 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 9985/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] The surface of synthetic yarns, particularly polyesters and polyolefines, is subjected to an acid treatment, the said yarn being modified by the incorporation of a minor proportion of highly polar basic nitrogen containing polymer, which comprises evacuating or partially evacuating a chamber containing the yarn uniformly moistened with at least 1% water on weight of fibre and wound on to a core and subsequently introducing the vapour of an acid anhydride into the evacuated or partially evacuated chamber and maintaining the yarn in contact with the acid anhydride until the vapour has combined with the water and substantial equilibrium achieved, steam being introduced into the chamber containing the yarn before or after evacuation or partial evacuation and before introduction of the acid anhydride whereby even moistening of the yarn is obtained. The acid anhydride is preferably sulphur dioxide or trioxide or nitrogen dioxide or pentoxide, numerous nitrogen containing polymers are specified.
