Abstract
1,139,289. Centrifugal casting-machines. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-AMOUSSON. 14 Feb., 1967 [10 March, 1966], No. 7016/67. Heading B3F. In the centrifugal casting of pipes T in a mould 1 supported on a carriage C and movable towards and away from a pouring trough B, the pipe T is extracted from the mould 1 by an automatically operated extractor E carrying tongs P and movable towards and away from the mould carriage C, the control device for automatically operating the extractor E including photo-electric cells 8 and 9 actuated by infra-red radiation from the molten and solidifying metal of the pipe T. Cell 8 operates when the socket end of the pipe is extracted and cell 9 is initially retracted by a spring biased jack 12, or alternatively covered by a retractable screen, during the pouring operation and then positioned or uncovered during the solidifying stage to " view " the smooth end of the pipe. During normal extraction the cell 9 senses the extraction of the smooth end of the pipe but, in the case of faulty extraction or fracturing of the pipe, cell 9 in conjunction with cell 8 acts through the control device to either reverse the movement of the extractor E to make another attempt at an extraction or the extracting operation of the machine is stopped to enable the mould to be manually cleared. The control device also comprises a contactor 14 operated when the mould carriage C reaches the end of its travel, and two contactors 15 and Cc spaced apart at one end of the track on which the extractor E moves. The extractor E is moved by a jack V. The control circuit of the control device (Fig. 4, not shown) includes a starting push-button (20), a master relay (RA) and various switches operated by the contactors 15 and Cc to control the direction of movement of the extractor E. The contactors may also be used to change the speed of the extractor E. During extraction the pipe T is supported on retractable supports 7.
