Abstract

1,138,949. Nuclear fuel. SNAM S.p.A. 12 Jan., 1966 [19 Jan., 1965], No. 1534/66. Heading G6C. [Also in Division C7] An alloy for use as a nuclear fuel consists of the balance being uranium. The uranium is present as a fine dispersion of γ-phase uranium in fine grained α-phase uranium having an average granule size not exceeding 40 microns and the structure is stable and free from preferred orientations. To produce the required structure the alloys are cooled from a temperature in the γ-phase region at a cooling rate of 300-50‹ C. per minute, heated to a temperature in the #-phase region for up to 3 hours, cooled at a rate of 400-4‹ C. per minute, continuously or stepwise, and then annealed in the α-phase region.
