Abstract

1,138,630. Removing bark. BRUNETTE MACHINE WORKS Ltd. 10 March, 1966, No. 10638/66. Heading B5L. [Also in Division F2] A seal between relatively rotatable members of, for example, an air-operatd machine for removing bark from logs in which a pressurized gas is transferred from one member to the other comprises a rotary U-shaped collar 52 provided with air passages 59, a stationary annular member 68 which is provided with air passages 106 and spaced from the base and shoulders of the collar to form an air chamber 76, and sealing rings 85, 86 which are normally urged into engagement with the shoulders of the collar by rubber 0-rings 92, 93 and provided with opposite end faces normally presenting substantially the same area to the pressure in the air chamber. One of the rings 85 is illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown), the sealing force being applied solely by the 0-ring (92) since areas (B) and (D) are in balance; when this ring (85) becomes worn, Fig. 6 (not shown), the 0-ring assumes a circular cross-section, the reduced force of the 0-ring being compensated for by the greater area (D) subjected to gas pressure. The tools 14 for removing the bark are operated by air cylinders 16 mounted on a flange 38 which is provided with air passages 44 and clamped, together with the U-shaped collar 52, on a shaft 20 for rotation by a chain driven sprocket wheel 54. Lubrication of the seal is effected by an oil mist nozzle 130 which is provided on an air inlet pipe 109 threaded into the stationary member 68. Preferably, the sealing rings 85, 86 are eccentrically-mounted.
