Abstract

1,138,229. Sealing glass to glass or metal. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. 22 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 57601/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division G1] The invention relates to the construction of a glass electrode containing a sealed half-cell, the final glass seal being made by microwave heating or sonic hammering. The electrode comprises an outer tube 14, attached to an inner glass cone 16 by a glass ring seal and having an ion sensitive bulb 22 formed at the lower end in conventional manner. The half cell is completed by a platinum wire 28 having a silver/silver chloride coating 30 at its lower end and a glass bead 56 (Fig. 5a) formed on it, which is inserted into the glass cone after electrolyte has been introduced e.g. by a syringe, and the seal is completed by a forming tool 68. As shown in Fig. 5a, the collar 62 of the forming tool is made of carbon and heated by induction from a coil 60. Alternatively the tool may be of metal to transmit sonic energy to the bead to effect a seal.
