Abstract

1,137,909. Maleic anhydride copolymers. AGFA-GEVAERT A.G. 31 Dec., 1965 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 55417/65. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G2] A copolymer I is prepared by reacting maleic anhydride and methacrylic acid (75 : 25) in benzene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and has a molecular weight of 1250 measured in dioxane. It is converted to a semi-ester by reaction with butanol and to a semi-imide by reaction with N-methyl urea. A copolymer III is also prepared by reacting maleic anhydride and styrene (75 : 25) in benzene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, has a molecular weight of 1050 measured in dioxane, and is reacted with NaOH. A copolymer is prepared similar to copolymer I having a ratio of maleic anhydride to methacrylic acid of (60 : 40) and is then reacted with sodium hydroxide.
