Abstract

1459000 Clear, stable unsaturated polyester resin/styrene solutions KAO SOAP CO Ltd 15 July 1974 [24 July 1973] 31248/74 Heading C3P A polymerizable styrene solution contains an unsaturated polyester, said polyester being made by condensing at 140‹ to 200‹ C. a mixture consisting essentially of (a) an acid component having 50-85 mole per cent of fumaric acid and/or maleic anhydride and 50- 15 mole per cent of tetrachlorophthalic acid or its anhydride with (b) a glycol mixture consisting essentially of 80-98 mole per cent of neopentyl glycol and 20-2 mole per cent of dibromoneopentyl glycol or dichloroneopentyl glycol, wherein the ratio of polyester to styrene is from 1 : 1 to 5 : 1. Examples describe styrene solutions of polyesters derived from neopentyl glycol with (1) and (3) dibromoneopentyl glycol, fumaric acid and tetrachlorophthalic anhydride; (2) maleic anhydride, dibromoneopentyl glycol and tetrachlorophthalic acid. The storage stability of the solutions is illustrated by comparison with a styrene solution of a polyester derived from neopentyl glycol, fumaric acid and tetrachlorophthalic anhydride. The solutions of the invention may be crosslinked by free radical initiated polymerization. A reinforced plastic sheet is prepared by applying the resin solutions to a sheet of chopped strand fibreglass, and the strength of these sheets compared with sheets prepared using commercially available unsaturated polyesters after soaking in (1) sodium hypochlorite and (2) chromic acid.
