Abstract

A polymer having repeating units of Formula I or II, viz.: <FORM:1124284/C3/1> <FORM:1124284/C3/2> where one of the pair of groups A and B and one of the pair of groups E and F is-OM and the other of each pair is <FORM:1124284/C3/3> where M is an ionizable cation forming atom or group, e.g. H, alkali metal or ammonium, and R is H or a substituent such that the compound <FORM:1124284/C3/4> has no developing activity for the silver halide in a photographic silver halide emulsion, e.g. p-COOM, is claimed. The polymer may be produced by reacting the corresponding anhydride polymer having the group -O- in place of groups of formula/sA OM and <FORM:1124284/C3/5> with an amine of formula <FORM:1124284/C3/6> In Examples: (1) a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride was reacted with p-aminosalicylic acid; (2) maleic anhydride and ethyl vinyl ether were polymerized in bulk in the presence of azo di-isobutyronitrile and the copolymer was reacted with p-aminosalicylic acid, i.e. <FORM:1124284/C3/7> (3) a copolymer of ethylene and maleic anhydride was reacted with ethyl glycine and p-aminosalicylic acid; (4) ethyl vinyl ether, ethyl acrylate and maleic anhydride were polymerized in acetone and in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and the copolymer was reacted with p-aminosalicylic acid; (5)-(8) the copolymers of (2) and (4) above were reacted with ethyl glycine and p-aminosalicylic acid or with m-aminophenol; and copolymers of ethyl vinyl ether and itaconic anhydride or vinyl butyl ether and maleic anhydride prepared by polymerizing the monomers in acetone with benzoyl peroxide may be similarly reacted as above.
