Abstract

1,137,146. Refrigerators; defrosting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 10 May, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 20584/66. Heading F4H. [Also in Division H5] A defrost heater for a refrigerant evaporator comprises a transparent tube 25 containing an electric heating coil 27, and end caps 28 which serve to mount the tube in a channel formed by aligned slots in the fins 23 of the evaporator coil 21, the tube being spaced from the edges of the fins. Each cap 28 comprises a phenolicresin body 29 having a vertical passage 30 and a horizontal passage 31 which contain conductors 35, 41 for connecting coil 27 to a lead 42, the latter being provided with a sleeve 44 for preventing moisture from entering the cap. The interior of tube 25 communicates with the exterior through the lower ends of passages 30. A reflector 51 is disposed above tube 25 and has baffled openings 61 near its ends to deflect heated air away from the caps 28. The evaporator is mounted in a duct (Fig. 1, not shown), which receives air from the freezer and storage compartments through inlets (11, 18 respectively) and includes a fan (10) for directing air through an outlet (19) to the storage compartment and through a further outlet (12), a chamber (14) and outlets (16) to the freezer compartment. The chamber (14) accommodates an ice-tray (15).
