Abstract
1,136,922. Fibres coated with silicon carbide. DOW CORNING CORP. 23 Nov., 1965 [26 Feb., 1965], No. 18384/67. Divided out of 1,136,921. Heading C1A. A reinforcement material comprises wires or filaments of tungsten, tantalum, stainless steel or carbon, each having a coating thereon consisting essentially of crystalline silicon carbide. The fibres are coated by heating them to at least 1150‹ C. and flowing thereover a gaseous alkylsilane or substituted alkylsilane having a carbon to silicon atomic ratio of at least 1À75 to 1. In the specific Example, a mixture of dimethyldichlorosilane with hydrogen is passed through a reaction chamber in which a tungsten filament is heated to 1200‹ C.
